V–A–C Sreda 1: Beyond

The conversations compiled in V–A–C Sreda 1: Beyond are part of a joint project organised by V–A–C Sreda online magazine in collaboration with the Vaults Centre for Artistic Production.

The search for unexpected interconnections and points of intersections, the formation of a shared language for different realities have always been the guiding principles for V–A–C Sreda online publications, as well as for public events and film screenings (part of the “Offline Sreda” cycle). The twelve conversations recorded in V–A–C Sreda 1: Beyond are also centred around these principles.

V–A–C Sreda stands out from other media by its will to live in the present, to put today ahead of yesterday and tomorrow. The homepage of the online journal spells out that each and every item will be accessible for a limited time. On a similar logic, the conversations in V–A–C Sreda 1: Beyond will be published in hard copy only. None of these texts could be found anywhere else before the book came out and if you lose your copy you will not be able to refer back to them in the future. Everything here is founded on two simple words: “the present.”

– Daniil Beltsov, excerpt from the preface to V–A–C Sreda 1: Beyond

In these conversations, V–A–C Sreda contributors and artists from the Vaults Centre for Artistic Production discuss various themes and discover non-obvious meanings within them. Taken together, the themes addressed in these conversations—ranging from architecture and urbanism to personal recollections and collective memory, festive feasts and wakes, music and sound art, video games and theatre, the traditional and the contemporary—constitute the environment in which we live (hence thetitle “Sreda, ” which is the Russian word for “milieu” or “environment”, as well as for “Wednesday”).

All of the texts were prepared specially for the Beyond collection and are published in hard copy only, in contrast with the online materials of V–A–C Sreda, which exist in digital space only and for a limited time.

The other key part of the project is the booklet-periodical Vaults: A2, compiled by the Vaults Centre for Artistic Production. Each issue of Vaults: A2 is dedicated to one of the workshops at the Vaults. The latest issue features illustrations by artists Slava Nesterov and Kristina Pashkova, which accompany and complement the texts of V–A–C Sreda 1: Beyond.
