IK-00. The Spaces of Confinement

A book about the architecture of isolation and the structure of state institutions of coercion.

The study of the ideological, structural, and architectural evolution of prisons, psychiatric hospitals, and similar institutions shows how the dialogue between violence and resistance changes over time.

The book IK-00. The Spaces of Confinement was published as a catalogue for the eponymous art project which V–A–C presented at the XIV International Architectural Biennale in Venice. Its organizers and participants tried to understand how a place to isolate people is created, how to look at it from the perspective of an eyewitness, and how it can be visualized. The book contains statements by sixteen artists about the space of confinement and the techniques of representing it.
