space force construction

13 May–25 Aug 2017

A conversation between contemporary artists and historic works, jointly organised with the Art Institute of Chicago.

The space force construction project brings over 100 works from the 1920s and ‘30s by the key Soviet artists into dialogue with new site-specific commissions and recent works by contemporary artists. The project examines the role of art and its relationship to society — a relationship which strengthens during periods of major social and historical transformation, as seen during the years of the Revolution. While the impact of the work produced by artists during that historic moment is widely recognised, the exhibition considers how their ideas have been developed over the course of the 20th century and what form they take today.

Integral to the exhibition are the Cinema/Performance and the Street Cinema programs, curated by Peter Taub.
